Palm Avenue Welcomes New Merchants

M. L. Gosling, 43 S. Palm Avenue (860-303-6239) features gift items in its attractive gallery as well as home décor and decorating ideas.

Current PA Developments

Downtown residential and commercial development has slowed due to the uncertain local real estate market. Several local projects have been
redesigned or postponed. Developers are reconfiguring two projects on Palm Avenue; one other has an even more uncertain future.

The adaptive reuse of the Hotel DeMarcay project by The Leiter Group was approved by the Sarasota City Commission in Dec 2006.
The condominium and restaurant project is slated to begin in 2009.

A long awaited parking project on 2.5 acres behind the Sarasota Opera on north Palm Avenue was also awarded to The Leiter Group, in a joint project with
The John Buck Co., of Chicago. The initial phase of this public-private partnership project is a 400 space parking garage.

Chillounge event brings hundreds to Palm Avenue
Congrat.. chill!.. ations to Rainer Scheer, creator of the Chillounge event on Saturday, Feb 2. Rainer’s storefront at Design O’Fresco, 32 S. Palm Avenue (330-2411) was the command center for this well-attended and successful event.

Chillounge was a first-of-a kind event on Palm Avenue, which provided intimate curbside settings with European-style furniture. By some estimates, nearly 3,000 people attended the event that included live entertainment, refreshments from major sponsors Bacardi and Goldcoast Distributors and food from select Sarasota restaurants.

Temporary Beautification on Palm
The Palm Avenue Chillounge event presented an outstanding example for the setting of furniture events and store-front beautification.

Arts Day 2008
A keystone of the local art scene, Arts Day 2008 showcased local arts and artists in dozens of kiosks, tents and venues along Main Street from Palm to Orange Avenues. Several thousands attend this annual one-day event. Palm Avenue was host to the student stage where young, rising stars performed musical and dance features.

Celebrities on Palm Avenue
Katherine Harris, a former member of the US House of Representatives, is a long-time advocate and supporter of local arts causes and artists. Frequently here, she was a recent visitor to Palm Avenue during January 2008 First Friday Art Walk. Here she is pictured with husband Anders Ebbeson (left) and Peter Paul (right), owner of the Peter Paul Gallery.
The Bette Davis exhibit  in November 2007 still draws attention to the Peter Paul Gallery. Collectors and fans alike continue to call about the memorabilia and letters that were included in this show. A video feature and interview by Mr. Chatterbox’ from Sarasota Magazine continues on YouTube.com

An example of artwork by noted local sculptor Jorge Blanco is featured in an international ad campaign for Infiniti automobiles. The ad appears in a Spanish-language magazine connecting Blanco’s clean, sleek, flawless sculptures with the lines and aerodynamics of the Infiniti EI FX. In fact, the sculpture in the ad was on display in the Peter Paul Gallery. A larger work by Blanco is featured in the current Season of Sculpture on  Sarasota’s bayfront.
The Peter Paul Gallery also features artwork by tennis great
Martina Navratilova and her artist partner Jurak Kralik. These unique, playful abstract paintings use various media and techniques to achieve an artist’s view of tennis. Their show and by-invitation-only reception are planned for April 2008 in the Peter Paul Gallery.

Thank You's

What do these four guys have in common? Like dozens of other people, they’ve picked up brooms, squee-gees, paintbrushes, clippers and assorted other tools to brighten-up and tidy-up Palm Avenue. To these guys and all of you, thanks for your help. Pictured here are windows being washed, Christmas decorations being hung, signs being mounted for Arts Day 2008 and streetlights being installed by the City of Sarasota.
