Palm Avenue Happenings

Sarasota Film Festival on Palm (click image to enlarge)

The 2007 Sarasota Film Festival was bigger and better than ever. The Palm Avenue merchants participated again in the annual Film Fest window display competition. The assignment was to depict a favorite movie theme. The competition included all of Downtown and Lakewood Ranch.

Art To Walk On, 64 S. Palm
Madison Park, 80 S. Palm
Peter Paul Gallery, 45 S. Palm

And The Winner Is...

Window display competition awards: A total of 3 awards in different categories were presented. Two of the winners are on South Palm Avenue! Congratulations to Madison Park, 80 South Palm Avenue and the Peter Paul Gallery, 45 South Palm Avenue.

Clap for Clapp

Newly elected City Commissioner Dick Clapp’s campaign promoting sensitive growth development with countless smiles and handshakes in downtown Sarasota and Palm Avenue paid off. Congratulations!

Creative Thinkers Series on Palm (click image to enlarge)

The Peter Paul Gallery offered 6 weeks of free lectures to the public. Speakers included artist Peter Koenig, artist Peter Paul, art history professor Kevin Costello, collector Dr. Roger Ferguson, appraiser Ray Nicoud and author Michael Woodward. The lecture series was well received by the local art community and supporters and left standing room only at the events.

New Creations on Palm

Students from the Ringling College of Art and Design are continuing the long established practice of art field trips to Palm Avenue. Water colors and acrylics depicting the beauty of this historic district will certainly earn high grades for the subject matter.

Parking on Palm

Valet parking and policing of violations are in place to keep limited Palm Avenue street parking open for customers. Help is on its way: The first phase of the North Palm Avenue project will begin with garage and public parking spaces.

Self-help on Palm

Palm Avenue merchants, like Brian O’Connell are creating a self-help beautification action on Palm. Plants are planted and walkways painted. (The color “battleship grey” raised eyebrows of some.)

In Honor

As part of its public art obligation, the 1350 building commissioned a metal portrait of the late local celebrity Jay Foley which was installed at the building on the Palm Avenue side. The commission was awarded to local sculptor Vicky Randall. Jay Foley was a Sarasota businessman, well known for restoring the Gator Club and the historic Orange Blossom Tower on Main Street.

Art on Wheels

Window-shopping tours on rented segues travel Palm Avenue and other downtown areas to the delight of residents and tourists alike. At least there is no parking problem here.

Movie World Premier on Palm Avenue (click image to enlarge)

The Blue Madonna, written by George Haborak and named after a painting in the Ringling Museum, was filmed with the participation of well-known local artists, writers and businessmen in 2006. This no-budget movie was exclusively filmed at the estate of art dealer and collector Jerry Chaplain. The public world premier was held in the Peter Paul Gallery, 45 South Palm Avenue. The movie was shown 3 times a week, free to visitors, on a large screen in the gallery. In addition, it was shown 24 hours a day for the duration of the Film Fest in the gallery window, visible from the exterior.

The 1350 building will be the new location of  First America Bank on Palm Avenue. The external transformation is on its way.

Whit’s End Has Closed

Sadly, we say goodbye to our longtime Palm Avenue neighbor after 11 years in the Mira Mar building.

Welcome Zero Gravity Dance Studio

Located at 55 South Palm Avenue, in the Mira Mar courtyard, is the newest Sarasota dance studio for young beginners, recreational and pre-professional dancers. West Florida's most progressive dance studio is teaching: Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, Tap, Acrobatics and Hip-Hop.

Commentary:

How did it happen?

The historic Mira Mar Hotel, visible landmark for Sarasota’s cultural district since 1924, disappeared due to the extensive build-out of the new 1350 building on the corner of Main and Palm. Strollers and visitors on Sarasota’s lower Main Street are deprived of a welcoming view of Palm Avenue’s setback Mira Mar Shopping Center, an architectural and cultural gem in Sarasota. Construction and staging of the project also added economic pain to the Palm Avenue merchants. The final version of the street level on Palm Avenue is treated as a secondary aspect of the development and is a design and landscape insult to the neighbors. Is anybody still wondering why the Palm Avenue merchants opposed the final version of the 1350 building so vehemently and are so concerned about future developments?
